EPSDT/ Well Child Exam
Parents know that they need to take their child to a pediatrician if their child falls sick. But they need to know that pediatrician visits are essential even for healthy children. A well-child exam or ESPDT, also known as Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic and Treatment, is a screening test to prevent or identify any health conditions that could become a hindrance in your child's natural growth and development. The EPSDT examination should include:
- Comprehensive health and developmental history
- An unclothed physical exam
- A current health/developmental history
- Conduct test to check the child's vision and hearing
- Developmental and nutritional assessment
- Required lab tests
- Identify substance abuse problems
- Conduct oral health assessment
- Provide health education and counseling
- Immunizations
When does my child need an EPSDT/Well-Child Exam?
A child must receive an EPSDT examination within 30 days from birth. The schedule for this examination is as follows:
5-6 examinations between 0 and 12 months of age:
- Newborn
- 1 month
- 2 - 3 months
- 4 - 5 months
- 6 - 8 months
- 9 - 11 months
Three examinations between 1- 2 years:
- 12 months
- 15 months
- 18 months
One examination every year between 3 and 20 years of age
