Sick Visits

Sick Visits

As a parent, it can be quite distressing when dealing with a sick child. Unfortunately, kids are prone to falling ill throughout their childhood due to viruses and bacteria that are contagious. There is also the possibility of incurring injuries during their play activities. At Healthy Kidz Paediatrics in Mesa, Arizona, we provide immediate and comprehensive care to help your child recover quickly.

When Should You Schedule a Sick Visit?

Most parents will be in a dilemma on when to avail medical help for their sick child. In many cases, particularly during flu and cold season, children can recover from sickness with fluids and rest. When booking an appointment with the pediatrician, parents are advised to be specific about their child’s symptoms. If the child exhibits chronic symptoms instead of acute ones, parents should schedule a consultation instead of a sick child visit. However, as pediatricians, we recommend that you seek immediate medical help when you notice the following symptoms:

  • High fever accompanied by symptoms such as headache, vomiting, rashes, confusion, or stiff neck
  • Persistent fever that does not subside even after three days
  • Widespread rash
  • Rashes that look like chickenpox
  • Rashes combined with heavy breathing
  • Vomiting continuously
  • Diarrhea
  • Any unusual condition that lasts for more than three days
  • Persistent pain, such as stomach-ache, sore throat, headache, or an earache

What Is Involved During a Sick Visit?

Sick child visits usually take around fifteen to thirty minutes. They involve examining the child’s symptoms, diagnosing the cause of the problem, prescribing the proper treatment, and discussing other crucial details with the parent.

During the appointment, our pediatrician, Dr. Manuel Galvez, will first ask about your child’s symptoms, when they began, and other questions that may help diagnose the child’s illness. This will be followed by a physical examination, which will be based on the reported symptoms. It includes noting down the child’s body temperature, assessing the breathing rhythm and heartbeat from the chest and back, and checking the neck or throat for signs of infection. Then we will also ask about home remedies and treatments that you may have already tried. These details will help us evaluate your child’s condition and prescribe the correct treatment.

In cases where we need more information to come up with a diagnosis, some lab tests, such as a urine test or a stool analysis, may be recommended. These are routine procedures that are completely safe for children and will not cause any discomfort.
